Keeping Active in Winter

Winter is around the corner and the colder, darker days can make keeping active a bit more challenging. However, it is during these chillier months that daily exercise becomes increasingly important, whether it is to combat seasonal affective disorder or to strengthen your immune system against colds and flu.

It may take a few extra steps, layers, and a little more motivation but there are still plenty of ways to get your heart rate up and body moving during winter.

Joining a gym is a great way to keep on track with your fitness goals year round but particularly in winter. It allows flexibility as you are not constrained by an early sunset or bad weather conditions.

If a gym membership is out of your budget, an at-home workout, guided by an online video if you’re feeling stuck, can be just as good. A set of affordable dumbbells can be easily stored and highly effective when incorporated into compound strength exercises like squats, lunges, abdominal exercises and arm and shoulder presses.

Resistance bands are also great additions to a home workout. They can be used in full body workouts, warm ups and gentle stretching while promoting joint health and muscle strengthening.

Being indoors doesn’t mean you can’t get your steps in. Small changes in your habits can make a big difference in winter. Opting to take the stairs up to your flat or doing a few laps around your office can help you hit your step target. If your budget allows, investing in a walking mat can help you get your daily walk in while answering emails.

Outdoor activity should not be avoided completely in winter. On clearer days, a brisk walk or light jog should still be incorporated into your exercise routines. Consider signing up to a challenge with a group of friends to keep you motivated and on track, whether this be a Couch to 5km challenge or Red January.

Smart layering will keep you warm and make outdoor activity more comfortable. Try to avoid bulky exercise gear and rather opt for light thermals that can be removed as your core temperature rises.

Warming up before exercising should never be skipped and this is especially true in winter. Cold muscles are more prone to strains so you should be  adding an additional 10 minutes to your usual warm up routine. Dynamic exercises like leg swings, arm circles, walking lunges, and light jogging on the spot can all help prepare your body for the chilly outdoors.

Although you may not be building up as much of a sweat as you do in summer, don’t neglect your hydration during your winter workouts. Hydrating throughout the day and after workouts is always important, even if you feel you aren’t losing fluids.

Reaching and maintaining your fitness goals during winter may sound daunting but the resources to do so are more accessible than ever. If you don’t know where to begin, book an appointment with one of Ultra Sport’s specialists who can guide you towards your healthiest winter yet.
